Mission Statement
The mission of UMBC’s Department of American Studies (AMST) is to advance the interdisciplinary study of American cultures through research, teaching, and service to the campus and community. AMST provides an individualized and student-centered interdisciplinary undergraduate education focused on the skills of critical analysis—thinking, reading, writing, and communication.
Vision Statement
The Department of American Studies strives to provide students with the skills to critically analyze issues of place, identity, and community through a comparative and transnational lens. We integrate our diverse strengths into a cohesive curriculum that provides undergraduate students with the intellectual skills and opportunities for professional success inside and outside of the academy.
