FROM: Provost Philip Rous and CAHSS Dean Scott Casper

In light of the recent events in Baltimore City, we are planning a teach-in with the UMBC community to offer an opportunity for continued open and thoughtful conversations about systemic issues affecting our communities. This open forum will be held on Friday, May 1, noon-1:50 p.m. in ENG 027 (Lecture Hall 5).

During the discussion, a panel of UMBC experts from a variety of fields will share their knowledge and different perspectives on the complex social and economic challenges that our Baltimore community is facing.

Our expert panelists include:

  • Dawn Biehler, Geography & Environmental Systems
  • Paul Dillon, Deputy Chief, UMBC Police
  • Nicole King, American Studies
  • Tyson King-Meadows, Political Science & Africana Studies
  • Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies
  • Derek Musgrove, History
  • Joby Taylor, Shriver Center
  • Carolyn Tice, Social Work

Ample time will be provided for discussion among those who attend. Through sharing experiences and perspectives, we can work together to understand and respond to what is happening in Baltimore and nationwide. We look forward to an open and authentic conversation at this critically important moment for our society.
