Opportunity: Interdisciplinary CoLab for Summer 2023

4-week Paid Summer Research Internship for Undergraduates


The Provost's Interdisciplinary Activities Advisory Committee is pleased to again offer UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab for Summer 2023, Summer Session One. This is a 4-week paid summer research internship for undergraduates.

  1. A Narrative-Based Curriculum for Writing and Civic Engagement of Latinx Youth
    Project Leader: Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Political Science and Global Studies
  2. CERA: Conservation Marketing & Engagement
    Project Leader: Dr. Jennifer Maher, English
  3. Documenting Places of Resistance: Black Tourism and Leisure during the Jim Crow Era
    Project Leader: Dr. Liz Patton, Media & Communication Studies
  4. Jazz and Justice: An American Art Form as Civic Deliberation
    Project Leader: Dr. Earl Brooks, English
  5. UMBC Special Collections LGBTQ+ Oral History Project 
    Project Leader: Dr. Kate Drabinski, Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies
The application deadline is Monday, March 13th. Selection results will be emailed to applicants by Wednesday, March 29th.

Project teams will meet in person for 30 hours per week for 4 weeks during SummerSession One: Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm from Friday, June 2nd - Friday, June 30.

Open to all majors, this is an excellent opportunity for students in STEM fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in social science and humanities fields to gain research and technical skills. Interdisciplinary teams will integrate narrative-based research and professional skills to create effective stories about UMBC's campus, our larger communities, and our lives. Participants receive a $3000 stipend and a scholarship that covers the cost of the 3-credit internship course. At the conclusion of the project, participants will receive a letter describing their contributions, which they can list on their resumes. Additionally, students have an opportunity to earn a Digital Badge in Interdisciplinary Collaboration
