Open to: - Majors/Minors: MLLI/Global Studies/Media Studies - Graduate Students: LLC/INCC students - Bilingual students and students with experience in design, and audiovisual production are encouraged to apply. - Commitment: 1 semester (renewable). Please submit a letter of interest listing your qualifications and how your interests intersect with the project to munozt@umbc.edu and lizarazo@umbc.edu.
Description of the project: Lack of knowledge about local immigrant communities reinforces stereotypes about immigration and the immigrant experience contributing to the naturalization of marginalization, dehumanization and criminalization of immigrants in the US. This project will promote one-on-one collaboration between UMBC students and members of immigration communities in Baltimore, or better yet critical exploration of students’ own immigrant experiences or ideas about immigration. By promoting the coproduction of digital stories, this project will enhance student’s language and cultural competence while making immigrants (particularly Spanish speakers) visible as part of the local community. UMBC’s diverse community will benefit from understanding that the lived experience of immigrants differs from well-known stereotypes. Deadline: May 1, 2017.
